Sunshine Learning Miami

Behavioral Disorder Counselor Intern

June - August 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I enjoyed being a change in the lives of kids with ADHD. I learned so much about this behavior disorder and the interventions to control the behaviors that come with this. Along with the exceptional training I was given before working with these kids I enjoyed being able to speak with counselors and supervisors that are currently doing what I’m doing.

What I wish was different

I wouldn’t change anything.

Advice

Never be afraid to just go for things even when they may see to be out of your comfort zone, or even too far for you to go. Because in the end it will all be worth it.

Student Assistant

January 2015 • Miami, FL

What I liked

Working with students to help improve their skills in mathematics

What I wish was different

That the director would listen to suggestions and be open to handle issues in advance as opposed to last minute. Being informed of things ahead of time before being asked by students about information we’re unaware of.

Advice

It’s genuinely something to experience, you make a difference in student’s lives. However remember that it isn’t for everyone so don’t force yourself if you don’t enjoy it.

Peer Writing Mentor

July - August 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

Working as a Peer Writing Mentor for the Humanities Edge Program was one of the most fun and fulfilling experiences I've had as an employee at FIU. Helping students who are transferring from Miami Dade College to FIU is rewarding in itself, but helping them write about their family and who get them to this point was a personal joy of mine.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been longer honestly because there is so much to learn about FIU and our Humanities Programs.

Advice

Careers within Humanities and/or STEM are equally realistic goals and degrees to pursue at FIU.

STP Summer Counselor

June - August 2019 • Miami, FL

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work alongside a staff of trained and dedicated caretakers all interested in the field of behavior modification in one way or another. It was an opportunity to wet one's feet in the field and understand the difficulty and benefits of what it is to work in behavior modification (with children with behavioral disorders).

What I wish was different

So, the supervisors who facilitated all of our work tested the reliability of our treatment every week with a test. The test, in my opinion, could have been adjusted to be more accurate of the treatment in its success. I failed to believe that our test scores on the definition of certain actions and consequences as per verbatim were accurate representations on the validity of our treatment.

Advice

I would give to all those who make their way over, to come with an open heart and ready mind. You will be challenged. Not just by the children but by the employees by your side. Make the best of it. Grow in experience and make connections.
